Weekend Getaway in Texas Hill Country

The boyfriend and I often plan a short weekend getaway in celebration of surviving the holidays and our anniversary. For our third anniversary, we decided to take a trip down to Texas Hill Country.

I came across a Facebook ad for a Retreat Getaway Cabin in Seguin, Texas, but this wasn’t an ordinary cabin. This cabin was the epitome of glamping with its canvas tent that sat in the high trees.

When I first booked the cabin, the boyfriend simply laughed and said, “You seriously booked a tent in January?!” Despite his skepticism, I knew this place would be a magical adventure.

We dropped Okie off, and headed south on I-35 on a Friday. We stopped at Magnolia Market because you can’t pass through Waco without getting some inspiration. Since my last visit, Chip and Jo have expanded at the Silos.

The old church was built in the late 1800s and moved to Magnolia Market.

I tend to visit on rainy days, and this particular visit was no exception. We walked through their main shop and admired their Spring 2021 reset. The boyfriend has an interest in gardening, so we walked through their garden section.

We noticed the new wiffleball field – Katy Ballpark at the Silos. I later learned that famous baseball legends including Babe Ruth played on these grounds, formerly known as Katy Park. I loved how they honored the history of Katy Park at the Silos.

They also added six small shops selling items to have spa day at home, journals to detail your daily activities, statement items to add to your wardrobe capsule and so much more. The quaint shops were absolutely adorable, almost like mini cottages.

The real focal point of the expansion is the giant church from the late 1800s that was moved to the Silos. It’s hard to put into words how breathtaking this structure is. The white walls paired with the original church pews and large windows makes any visitor feel at peace.

Chip and Jo finally opened Magnolia Press Coffee Co on the corner of the lot. While I didn’t make it in there, it’s definitely on my to-do list for my next visit. We did manage to get cupcakes to-go from the bakery because it’s tradition.

After leaving Magnolia, we continued through the traffic in Austin and arrived at our getaway cabin in Seguin. It was 20 degrees warmer than at home, and I was so happy to see a few rays of sunshine and to get out of the car for a moment.

The Retreat Getaway Cabin is located next to Geronimo Creek in Seguin, Texas.

The cabin was exactly like the photos in the advertisement. Two beds sat on either side of the cabin covered with cozy quilts. A wooden daybed faced a tv and a small table for dining. String lights created a warm and cozy atmosphere. It was so inviting that I forgot to snap a photo of the inside before settling in.

We hit up an antique store down the road called Blue Hills Antique Mall, which had a great collection of rusty farm tools, worn books and painted dishes. We highly recommend checking them out if you are ever in the area.

Everyone knows that Texas is well-known for their barbecue, and it’s the law to visit a barbecue pit at least once on a trip to Texas. Well, it’s not a law… but it should be! We ate at Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar•B•Que in New Braunfels, which has been around since 1962. I’ve visited the one in the Fort Worth Stockyards and knew this place would not disappoint.

We spent the next morning hiking at Guadalupe River State Park before it started raining. We were unaware that you needed a reservation to spend the day there, but the rangers were able to let us in for the day. The trails weren’t marked, so it was a little difficult to determine where the trails started. The best view was on the short .3-mile River Overlook Trail. While the trees were bare, it was easy to imagine how beautiful the scene would be in the summer with bright green leaves.

Guadalupe State Park offered several hiking trails including a short trail that overlooked the Guadalupe River.

We made our way to the Historic Market Square in San Antonio for lunch. The market square is rich in old Mexican culture, and the vibrant colors brightened the dreary day.

The boyfriend and I ate at Mi Tierra Café & Bakery, where Christmas lights are up year-round and Mariachi musicians perform while dining. We shared beef fajitas that were seasoned to perfection, and the homemade flour tortillas were to die for.

We hoped to visit the Alamo since the boyfriend had never been, but we decided to have a literal “rain check” on the visit. We hope to come back soon and explore the history and culture of San Antonio soon.

We spent the afternoon shopping for an upcoming party back at home and decided to have a relaxing rainy evening at the cabin. While I wished the rain would’ve subsided to have a campfire, it was still nice to recharge our batteries while sharing the cupcakes from Silos Baking Co.

Our weekend getaway in Texas Hill Country was refreshing and exactly what we needed.

The only downside to the cabins were the bathroom/shower situation. Each cabin had its own private incinerating commode that came with special instructions for how to use. Let me just say there is nothing quite like the burnt smell from an incinerating toilet wafting through your getaway cabin.

Fortunately, they had a trailer that had private restrooms about 25 yards away. The trailer also had private showers, but the water was absolutely freezing. I wouldn’t mind the cold water in the warm, summer months, but it was quite unpleasant in mid-January.

These are obviously not first world problems, but it’s simply an honest observation. Aside from the cold showers and incinerating toilet, the cabin at Geronimo Creek Retreat was a fun place to get away for a weekend.

While I didn’t take many photos, I can assure you it was still magical. Like all weekend getaways, this one ended all too soon. It reminded me how much I missed traveling during this whole pandemic, and we are already dreaming of our next adventure.

Your friend,

Laci
